WEAVED AND GEMTEK PARTNER TO DISRUPT THE INTERNET OF THINGS SUPPLY CHAIN

By Using Gemtek-Manufactured Smart Devices with Embedded Weaved Fabric, IoT Developers Can Go from Idea to Commercial Products in as Little as Six Weeks

LAS VEGAS, NV – January 6, 2015 – In a step that has the potential to disrupt the Internet of Things (IoT) supply chain, Gemtek, (TSE: 4906), a world-leading provider of Wireless Broadband solutions, is demonstrating at CES a series of smart-devices which incorporate the Weaved IoT fabric. Because this fabric includes all of the necessary technology to enable a product to work on and be controlled over the Internet, developers with a great idea can sidestep the long development time, expense, and challenges of hardware equipment and network infrastructure design and manufacture. They can focus on creating new and innovative applications that will run easily on Weaved's IoT cloud.

“Our goal is for the IoT market to be as open and vibrant as the smartphone market has become,” said Ryo Koyama, founder and CEO of Weaved. “By decoupling the hardware and networking technology from application design and implementation of products, an app-driven market and economy can emerge. Many new products can be brought to market quickly and from anyone with an idea.”

This is in contrast to the first generation of IoT products that have all been designed and offered by a small number of companies with substantial resources to fund large teams working on an array of activities needed to get a working product to market. These include, among others, hardware design, networking and cloud technologies, manufacturing, and more.

The Weaved model dramatically changes this. The time to achieve a prototype and commercial products can be cut dramatically — likely similar to the time required for mobile application products. Developers can simply purchase a Weaved-enabled hardware kit and with the provided software development tools and cloud infrastructure, begin to realize their application solely in software, and with zero hardware design or cloud infrastructure investment. When they are ready to go to production, they can order customized versions of the hardware with their logo and preferred color scheme, and receive fully certified products in as little as six weeks. Makers can also use the provided mechanical specification to design and have fabricated their own product designs.

“Weaved is redefining the economics, ecosystem, and pace of the Internet of Things market,” said Howard Chen, Chairman and President of Gemtek, “By embedding the Weaved fabric, our products can fuel creativity and speed time to market as never before.”

Weaved-Based IoT Devices being shown at CES

The Weaved-based products being shown by Gemtek at CES (under the Blackloud brand) include: a smart plug, two lighting products, two routers, two Wi-Fi cameras and a Wi-Fi enabled sprinkler controller. (For more details, see http://www.weaved.com/hardware-iot-kits.

For example, if a developer had a great idea for a universal remote control, he or she could build an application on the smart plug, which includes an infra-red repeater. A companion mobile app would replace the multitude of remote controls that consumers typically have for their audio/video equipment.

Or, with either of the smart lighting products, a property management company could develop an application that allows all outdoor lighting for a facility to be controlled from a central facility, allowing them to gain control of both energy efficiency and safety for their real estate holdings from any smartphone.

With the 360 degree Wi-Fi camera, a developer could develop their own “photo booth“ application, which tourist attractions or points of interest could market and use to offer unique pictures for their patrons.

By building on these platforms, a developer receives a fully certified, ready for world-wide shipment hardware product, with all of the cloud services necessary to enable IoT capability already pre-programed in.

These products are expected to be available for purchase in the next few months.

Said Koyama, “With this model, developers can move right to the great idea, without the delay, expense, and complexity of designing the hardware and network infrastructure from scratch.”

The Weaved Fabric and Services

Weaved has designed an IoT fabric that makes the Internet of Things for Everyone possible. It eliminates the need for in-house expertise in networking, services, mobile, security, and firmware development. At the heart of the Weaved technology is a sophisticated software-defined networking fabric that can be used with any hardware product. This fabric employs two levels of secure IoT cloud networking service to allow users a variety of services and features. Direct network connections are peer-to-peer, encrypted, and each connection session is protected using a unique security key.

The Weaved Fabric is different from all other current IoT connectivity solutions which either rely on security-vulnerable port-forwarding or hub-and-spoke connectivity. The alternatives to Weaved both require an always-on Internet connection and raises the privacy concern of running data through a third party server. Weaved's approach allows developers to choose to use standard TCP/IP connectivity, without concerns typically associated with remote connectivity. The open Weaved technology also allows developers the choice to avoid proprietary closed 'walled garden' approaches taken by closed platforms.

Weaved recently launched its fabric to the Raspberry Pi community to start to introduce the Internet of Things for Everyone. Over time, broader communities of individuals will be able to use Weaved to be limited only by their imagination for the Internet of Things.

About Weaved

Weaved is committed to the vision of making it possible for anyone to create their own Internet of Things applications, to realize the Internet of Things for Everyone. Today, the company offers a fully-capable, software-only; hardware-agnostic platform and drop-in services to easily enable sophisticated users and developers to add Internet of Things capability to any already networked products. Weaved was founded by a team of experienced entrepreneurs; one of their earlier companies, a networking company, was acquired by NVIDIA. Weaved is also a charter member of the All Seen Alliance, a non-profit consortium dedicated to enabling the Internet of Everything through a universal development framework. Weaved is based in Palo Alto, CA and is funded by CrunchFund (San Francisco), Metamorphic Ventures (New York), Core Ventures Group, Haystack, Double M Partners, TMT Investments, Maxfield Capital, Alpine Meridian, Ironfire Capital, Big Basin, HB Rama and others.
